Why did you choose to volunteer for Hertfordshire Mind Network?

I wanted to help with a local charity for my placement year from university. I’ve always had an interest in mental health and have had some personal experience due to living with a chronic illness.

How long have you been volunteering for?

Since September 10th 2018

How has volunteering benefitted you?

Volunteering has given me valuable experience in so many ways. It has helped to boost my confidence both when interacting with clients and reaching out to local businesses. I have gained a clearer understanding of how charities operate and realised that charity work is something I would like to come back to when I have finished with university. I have also been able to put into practice some of the things I have learned through my degree as well as learning from the marketing teams valuable experience.

What project do you volunteer for?

I volunteer with the marketing team which has involved many different projects, such as Red January, social media campaigns and research into local businesses and charities to work with.

What is your role as a volunteer?

My role is Student Placement for the Marketing team. I help with making social media posts for awareness days, like RED January and making infographics to show the impact Herts Mind has on the people they support.

Describe a memorable moment?

Helping with the Christmas meeting place, it's one thing to hear and write about all the valuable work HMN does behind a computer screen but it’s another to see the smiles on the client's faces as they interact with people who are in similar situations yet come from different walks of life.
