Purpose of role

We are seeking empathetic and understanding volunteers to provide one to one support to clients suffering from mental ill health, who need support in their employment pathway.

Employment Mentors will work with clients to achieve goals established jointly by the client and the Employment Mentor. 

This is a great opportunity for anyone looking to develop their understanding of mental health issues and/or support people that are experiencing mental illness. It will also build experience of increasing client’s employability and readiness for work.

Full training will be provided.

Time commitment

A minimum of 2 hours per week, for up to 6 months


Waltham Cross, Ware, Bishops Stortford

Main tasks

  • To help clients establish achievable goals to work towards during the partnership, using the Work Star
  • Looking at volunteering opportunities with clients
  • Searching for courses and further education opportunities
  • Assist clients with completing paperwork
  • Assist clients to use the laptops for job searching, registering with job sites, online applications, creating e-mail accounts, using e-mails, CV and covering letter creation
  • Assist clients with role play for interview preparation
  • Provide emotional support to clients in a learning environment
  • Engage with clients through talking and active listening
  • Signpost clients to other Hertfordshire Mind groups, courses and Peer Support as well as  external services which may be of benefit
  • Report any safeguarding issues immediately to the Employment Specialist
  • Debrief with Employment Specialist after each session
